Toe Woes

A couple of weeks ago, while Eric was in Peru and Chili, Abi had come to me and told me her foot hurt.  A quick check and it appears she had a blister--here lets put a bandaid on it, b/c you know bandaids cure everything and lets get on with our business.  I think I checked it one more time during that week and appeased her with a bandaide and some neosporin.  Sunday, we are getting ready for our last Nutcracker rehearsal before the big show next weekend and she again complains about her toe.  'Well, let me take a good look at that thing".  This is what I found.  Oh, the horror.  Ummmm, Eric, I think you need to come here.  We have a problem.  While I am not sure how we got to this level of infection, I will say that I must be a bad mommma for not figuring this out earlier.  What prceeded was a semi, ah hum, argument between Eric and I.  Me:  She has got to go to her last rehearsal.  Eric:  She needs to go to the Dr. now.  Me:  But it is her last rehearsal.  Eric:  I can't believe we are arguing about taking our daughter to the Dr.  I ended up taking her to a minute clinic, b/c it is Sunday.  Oh, they were just going on lunch break--we'll be back in an hour.  Me:  not acceptable, I still have to get my daughter to practice.  So, we drive to another Minute clinic.  Nurse freaks out saying she can't handle this difficult of a case and Abi might need IV antibiotics and we don't want to loose the toe.....  Wait, are you talking about amputating her toe!  Soooo, we left there and went to an emergency room clinic.  Dx--big time infection--they took cultures, told us to soak it twice a day, not to wear a shoe, only a slipper, no PE,  put her on heavy antibiotics and told us to follow up with our pedi.  Me:  OK, so we are good.  Can we go to dance rehearsal?
Does all the puss gross you out?

Special slippers mommy bought Abi to wear to school.  She thought it was way cool wearing one shoe and one slipper.

A few days later.  Not as pussy, but now all that nasty skin is drying and falling off.

A few days later.  Still drying.  It was at this point that we also had our follow up with o ur pedi.  She was not happy that after being on antibiotics for 8 days, this was all the healing we had done.  So now we are on a different, super strong antibiotic and it appears to be working.

Update--as of Jan 1 the dead skin is gone, but you can still something under the nail.    We think that there is some dried blood under the toe and that is possibly the original site of the infection.  Can't wait for our personal nurse, Aunt Ann to take a look at it next weekend.
